Skelmersdale Town FC: Football Comes Home

A new chapter is unfolding in Skelmersdale, bringing senior football home and giving generations of local players something to believe in.

There is something deeply emotional about hearing a football crowd roar in its own town. For Skelmersdale Town FC, that sound is more than the noise of a matchday. It is the sound of football coming home.

Formed in summer 2026, the club merged Clay Brow, JN Sports and TQ Sports, creating something special for Skelmersdale. After years of hoping for senior football to return, Clay Brow has reclaimed the Skelmersdale Town name, previously used between 2009 and 2012.

For Jay Howarth, Joe Nicholson and Garreth Rafferty, who run the club, this is personal. Jay grew up watching Skelmersdale United and dreaming of representing his hometown. Now he wants today’s young players to feel that same excitement and believe they can one day pull on the senior shirt.

Already, that dream is becoming reality.

At just 17, Aleksis Birsans stepped up from the U18s to make his senior debut. His journey captures the club’s philosophy: if you have the ability, determination and attitude, age won’t stand in your way.

“This is Skem’s club, built by its people, for its future.”

The pathway stretches from junior football through the U18s, up to the first team, with a dedicated army of coaches, volunteers and supporters determined to build something lasting.

At JMO Sports Park, the club now has a home of its own. Thanks to John Mallison’s work relaying the pitch, players and supporters can come together in a place they can proudly call theirs.

That sense of belonging is already visible. Families gather, old friends reconnect, youngsters watch their heroes and supporters roar every tackle and goal.

This is more than a football club returning. It is a town rediscovering its identity, its pride and its passion — together.
