Why genuine human connection matters more than ever in an increasingly digital world.
“People don’t always need fixing, sometimes they simply need company.”
Do you remember when people used to knock on each other’s doors? No warning text. No checking calendars three weeks in advance. No “sorry I’m too busy.” People simply popped round for a brew and a chat. Somewhere along the way, we stopped doing that.
Life became faster, more digital, more scheduled, and somehow, despite having more ways to communicate than ever before, many people feel more disconnected.
In Skelmersdale, community has always been one of our strongest qualities. People still help each other here. They still rally round during hard times. But there’s no denying that genuine social connection has changed over the years. A lot of conversations now happen through screens instead of face to face.
At About the Town Central, one thing we hear regularly is how much people miss simple interaction. Not networking. Not social media engagement. Just real conversation. The truth is, humans were never designed to do life entirely alone. Maybe that’s why community spaces, local events, coffee shops and creative groups matter more now than they ever did before.
Because sometimes people don’t need fixing. They just need company.
