From junior parkruns to marathon fundraising, Skelmersdale runners are inspiring connection, resilience and community pride across the town.
Across Skelmersdale, running is helping build confidence, friendship and community spirit for people of every age.
At Skelmersdale Junior Parkrun, families recently celebrated the event’s 400th run and 15,000th finisher. Every Sunday morning, young runners gather at Tawd Valley Park for the free weekly 2k course, supported by volunteers, parents and organisers who ensure every child feels welcomed and encouraged. Founded almost a decade ago by Paul Cotterill, the event has become one of the town’s most uplifting community traditions.
That same determination was reflected by Alex Gould, who completed the London Marathon earlier this year in memory of her sister Ellis. Balancing marathon training with university studies, Alex raised more than £4,000 for Diabetes UK while also helping raise awareness of type 1 diabetes.
Together, both stories show how running can bring people together, inspire resilience and create lasting connections across the Skelmersdale community. Whether chasing marathon medals or taking first steps beside friends, local runners continue proving that encouragement, kindness and shared goals can shape healthier, happier communities while inspiring future generations to get involved themselves each week.
